Male Domestic Violence
While more than 1 in 3 women will experience abuse at the hands of an intimate partner at some point during their lives, nearly 1 in 4 men will experience abuse as well. Although males make up a smaller percentage of all victims of domestic or intimate partner violence, the actual number is likely higher as men are more likely not to report their abuse or seek help.
Men have been socialized not to express their feelings, to “suck it up” and to “be a man.” This can make it especially hard for a man to reach out for support services. Pervading beliefs or stereotypes can make it even more challenging. In fact, many men remain silent because they think no one will ever believe them.
Abuse does not discriminate based on gender. Violence can and does happen to men.
If you are experiencing abuse, Harmony House provides the same services to all individuals. We can help you with a safety plan and safe shelter.
